Coniac Cottage, North Creake
Beautiful North Norfolk Cottage to Let
The Surrounding Area
There is a seemingly endless list of things to do and see within a short distance of Coniac Cottage. Here we list a few of our favourites;
Holkham Hall and grounds (Walkable south entrance less approx. 2 miles)

The Earl of Leicester (owner of the Holkham estate) allows free access to most of the Holkham grounds and you can walk literally for miles within its walls. There is a triumphal arch and an obelisk both with stories and also a lake with cruises in the summer and acres of ground in which to picnic. The grounds are also home to livestock of many sorts including deer. Also within the grounds is a fascinating nursery where you can purchase many varieties of plant-life.
The hall itself is well worth a visit with an enormous collection of paintings and sculptures built up over the centuries and now proudly displayed within.
There is also, on the estate, the Victoria Hotel (on the main A149 road) which has a nice garden and does the best barbecue around most weekends throughout the summer. The tea rooms and gift shop are also worth a visit with their pretty rose garden and interesting selection of gifts.
No Mention of Holkham would be complete without reference to Holkham Beach. The place is just simply magnificent. A huge beach when the tide is out it has spectacular views and has been used as a backdrop in many films and T.V. Dramas, most notably in the movie Shakespeare in Love. Behind the beach are sand dunes and behind these is a Pine wood planted to give some protection to the hinterland but now home to many and varied wildlife.
Burnham Market (Walkable within 3 miles)
The pretty village of Burnham Market is three miles north of North Creake. Burnham Market is a traditional and quaint “Old English Village” with two pubs , The Nelson and the renowned Hoste Arms (pub/hotel/restaurant), a fish Restaurant, butchers, delicatessen, wet fish shop, green grocers, clothes and gift shops, a wine merchant, antique shop, hardware shop, book shop, a Post Office/newsagent, a pharmacy, a bank and for essentials a small supermarket.
Burnham Market can be great excursion for shopping or for a nice meal. Prices are sometimes on the high side but it is a most interesting experience.
Fakenham (Drive there in 6/7 minutes)
The market town of Fakenham is 7 miles to the south and has everything you would imagine with a large choice of shops and services, a bowling alley and entertainment centre, a racecourse, a regular Thursday market in the town centre and a Farmers Market on the last Saturday of every month.
Wells-next-the-sea (Drive there in 5/6 minutes)
This seaside town is approximately 5 miles away and although quite small it has all the trappings you would expect, with, a busy high street full of shops and a quayside full of fish & chip shops, gift shops, ice cream parlours and cafes. From here the Albatross sailing boat does sea cruises and you can arrange fishing trips and trips to see the Seal colony at Blakeney Point.
Titchwell bird reserve (Drive there in 10/15 minutes)
RSPB owned this impressive reserve has several hides among the marshes and a walk down to the beach. There is a coffee shop, car park and RSPB gift shop. The reserve is open to non members but the car park is pay and display.
Cley-next-the-sea village and bird reserve (Drive there in 15/20 minutes)
The pretty village of Cley (pronounced clay) has very narrow streets and was obviously not built with today's traffic in mind. For this reason it can often be a bottleneck on the coast road. It is worth a visit though for its pretty cottages and the excellent fish smokehouse. There are also two very good pubs, the George and the Three Swallows as well as a pottery studio, art studio and a very good delicatessen.
The bird reserve belongs to the Norfolk Wildlife Trust and a charge is made for access where hides and a circular walk around the marshes are included. Alternatively drive down the beach cafe ( a parking charge is levied here) to take in just the beachfront aspect of the reserve.
